Reps Vow to Put an End to University Strikes

The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has pledged to take decisive action to end the recurring strikes plaguing Nigerian universities, ensuring a more stable academic environment.

Speaking at a meeting with the Executive Secretary of the National University Commission, NUC, and Vice-Chancellors of federal Universities in Abuja, Chairman of the committee, Abubakar Fulata emphasized the need for proactive measures in addressing the persistent issue.

“This meeting is crucial, considering the current government, assembly, committee, and leadership dynamics,” Fulata remarked.

Highlighting the committee’s renewed vigor, he disclosed the creation of six specialized oversight committees, aimed at enhancing the quality of education within the university system.

Fulata underscored the committee’s commitment to ensuring top-notch, accessible, and fulfilling university education, lamenting the prevalent challenges such as strikes, cultism, insecurity, drug-related activities, and moral decadence.

Recognizing the need for a collective approach in addressing these challenges, he called for the intervention of the committee alongside contributions from all well-meaning Nigerians.

In response, the acting Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Chris Maiyaki, acknowledged the myriad of challenges faced by Nigerian universities and expressed optimism that the concerted efforts of the National Assembly would address some of these issues.

Moreover, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, representing the Vice-Chancellors, affirmed the potential of Nigerian universities to emerge as pinnacles of academic excellence in Africa.

The proactive stance of the House of Representatives Committee is indicative of a renewed drive to foster an environment of stability and growth within Nigerian universities, aiming to elevate the nation’s educational system and mitigate disruptions that hinder academic progress.
