Nigeria Faces Gravest Security Crisis Since Independence

Nigeria is confronting its most severe security crisis since independence, according to Afenifere, a Yoruba socio‑cultural organization. Its leader, Reuben Fasoranti, made this observation during the 25th anniversary of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) in Kaduna. He warned that the nation is experiencing unprecedented violence, eroding public trust and weakening social bonds.

Fasoranti called on Northern and Southern leaders to forge urgent partnerships to curb the escalating violence and deepening mistrust. He praised the ACF for 25 years of service and advocacy, noting that it has remained a stabilising voice for the North and a platform for national dialogue, unity and cohesion. The Silver Jubilee, he said, is a moment for sober reflection on the country’s challenges.

Nigeria’s security situation has reached a critical point, presenting immense and complex problems. Nevertheless, Fasoranti expressed confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, particularly his “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which he believes can steer the country toward stability. He stressed that addressing these challenges requires sincerity of purpose, courageous leadership and a renewed commitment to fairness and justice.

To move forward, Fasoranti urged strengthened cross‑regional cooperation built on mutual respect and shared responsibility between Northern and Southern leaders. He also advocated revisiting Nigeria’s foundational debates of 1953‑1966, arguing that historical introspection is essential to confront current insecurity and safeguard the nation’s future.

The security crisis has significant implications for Nigeria’s stability and development. As the government and stakeholders work to address these challenges, prioritising dialogue, unity and cooperation is essential. By doing so, Nigeria can pursue a more stable and secure future, address citizens’ concerns and promote national cohesion.
