Edo State has confirmed eight additional cases of Lassa fever, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 115. The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akoria Obehi, also reported one more death from the disease, increasing the fatality count to 13. In response to the rising cases, she emphasized that the government is intensifying efforts to contain the disease across all communities in Edo. She urged residents to support these efforts by adhering to the established protocols designed to prevent the spread of the illness.
Prof. Akoria stated, “We have confirmed eight new cases of Lassa fever in Edo State, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 115.” She noted that, with the new figures, there are currently 40 individuals receiving care at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, including 26 adults and 14 children. The Commissioner reassured the public that the state is well-prepared and equipped to manage reported cases of Lassa fever.
She urged anyone experiencing symptoms such as severe headache, vomiting, and high fever to promptly visit the nearest healthcare center. Additionally, she encouraged individuals who have been in contact with someone confirmed to have Lassa fever or who suspect they may have symptoms to reach out to disease surveillance or notification officers in their local government areas.
