Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu did not attend the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) mega rally in Enugu State due to his ongoing mourning for the late Abia governorship candidate, Prof. Uche Ikonne. The rally took place on Friday to officially launch the campaign for Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the state governor and candidate for the Enugu-North Senatorial District. Notably, the event was attended by several members of the G-5 governors, including Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State, and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

Ikpeazu’s absence raised speculation about his potential departure from the G-5, a faction of five PDP governors led by Wike, who have distanced themselves from the national leadership of the party. They claim that the leadership failed to honor an agreement to return power to the South. To clarify the situation, Chief John Kalu, the Director of Strategic Engagement for the Abia State PDP Campaign Council, issued a statement on Saturday. He emphasized that Ikpeazu was still in mourning and would refrain from attending any political events until Monday.

Kalu’s statement included a directive from Ikpeazu to lower all flags at Abia State PDP offices to half-mast and to suspend all campaign activities for the party at all levels until January 30, 2023. He expressed that both Ikpeazu and other members of the PDP, as well as the people of Abia, were not in a mood for political gatherings during this period of mourning.
