The Presidency has expressed that the opposition’s concerns about the size of Nigeria’s delegation to the COP28 Summit in Dubai signify potential reluctance to showcase the benefits of President Bola Tinubu’s involvement. This revelation came from Dada Olusegun, the Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Social Media, through an official post on Sunday, December 3.
Media Talk Africa has highlighted public discontent surrounding the scale of the Nigerian representation at the Climate Change summit. Nigerians on social media have raised questions about the inclusion of certain individuals on the alleged list.
According to the presidency, the opposition’s fixation on the delegation’s size serves as a diversion from the momentous agreement inked by Nigeria and Germany on the sidelines of the summit. This agreement pledges to oversee the comprehensive modernization and expansion of Nigeria’s electrical power transmission grid.
The presidency’s statement contends that the opposition’s narrative is fixated on the delegation’s size, diverting attention from tangible advancements. They reiterated, “The opposition doesn’t want you to see the gains of Nigeria’s participation in #COP28. They will rather take your attention as a patriot and progressive from The agreement signed by Nigeria and Germany on the sidelines of the summit that will see to the end-to-end modernization and expansion of Nigeria’s electric power transmission grid with the full supply, delivery and installation of Siemens-manufactured equipment under the timeline of 18 to 24 months.”
It is evident that the opposition is being accused of channeling the public’s focus towards the size of the delegation, consequently neglecting verifiable accomplishments. In the president’s words, “They pushed a distraction about the size of the delegation and our patriots and abandoned verifiable gains.”
This accusatory tone casts a stark spotlight on the opposition’s priorities, implying that they are disregarding the actual progress made during the summit. These sentiments raise pertinent questions about the opposition’s intentions and its impact on the perception of Nigeria’s international engagements.
