The Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) has voiced its concern over the upcoming election of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), emphasizing the critical need for transparency in the electoral process. In a statement released by TMG’s chairman, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, the organization highlighted the pivotal role of a transparent election in fostering confidence among Nigerians and reinforcing the establishment of internal democracy within the country’s registered political parties.

Emphasizing the significance of IPAC as the apex body representing all registered political parties in Nigeria, TMG underscored the imperative nature of ensuring a free, fair, credible, transparent, inclusive, and peaceful electoral environment in the country. The statement illuminated the prevailing skepticism regarding IPAC’s ability to fulfill its core mandate, given the historical challenges encountered in achieving this objective.

TMG adamantly pointed out the looming specter of political manipulation, cautioning against the appropriation of IPAC’s leadership by vested interests seeking to undermine its independence. The organization decried the recurring pattern of planting loyalists and individuals of dubious integrity in various institutions crucial to democratic development, citing adverse repercussions on the nation’s democratic fabric.

The statement echoed widespread concerns about attempts to subvert the IPAC election, portraying a stark portrayal of a regime intent on quashing dissenting voices. With a keen focus on preserving the fundamental principles of democracy, TMG underscored the pivotal importance of impartiality within the council, particularly in light of the shortcomings of opposition parties in fulfilling this pivotal role.

TMG vehemently condemned the pervasive practice of monetizing elective positions within Nigerian politics, branding it as both undemocratic and detrimental to the evolutionary trajectory of the democratic process. The organization outlined its dismay over the inclusion of candidates with pending criminal cases in the electoral race, expressing incredulity at the tolerance of such individuals’ participation in a pivotal election of national significance.

In a resounding call to action, TMG urged the conscientious members of IPAC to exercise their voting rights judiciously, advocating for the exclusion of individuals marred by integrity deficits from assuming positions of authority. The organization reiterated the imperative of nurturing an IPAC characterized by individuals of unwavering integrity, reaffirming the pivotal role of such a council in shaping public perception and bolstering confidence in the political party reform agenda.

As the eagerly anticipated December 18th election draws near, TMG emphasized its instrumental role in instilling a renewed sense of optimism among Nigerian citizens, highlighting the profound impact of a credible IPAC election in galvanizing public confidence and paving the way for essential political reforms.
