Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, made a fervent call on Tuesday for empathy and support towards the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice or suffered disabilities while defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity on the war fronts.

Speaking at the emblem and appeal fund launch to mark the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, Governor Oyebanji, represented by Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, emphasized the need for profound appreciation and compassion towards the heroes and their families.

“We cannot over-celebrate our armed forces personnel, living or fallen, serving or retired, because of their contributions to national unity and security. The bravery and vigilance of these officers must never be forgotten,” Governor Oyebanji expressed.

Acknowledging the sacrifices made by military personnel, the Governor stressed the importance of extending assistance to the families of war veterans, stating, “Our gathering here is not only to celebrate the fallen heroes but to also raise funds to assist the immediate families of the war veterans.”

In a heartfelt plea, Governor Oyebanji urged all Nigerians to prioritize peace and actively work against any actions that could incite acrimony or unrest. He emphasized the profound impact of war and unrest, underscoring the lingering scars left by past conflicts and the importance of sustaining peaceful coexistence.

Adding to the appeal, Ekiti State chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Col Atoki Abdurasaq (retd), highlighted the significance of honoring the gallant soldiers who made immense sacrifices in safeguarding the sovereignty of the Nigerian nation. “The emblem launch is aimed at raising funds to support the families of those who died at the war fronts while fighting for our nation. This is the best honor we can do for their families so that their efforts won’t be in vain,” he affirmed.

The event was graced by Governor Oyebanji, his deputy, members of the State Executive Council, local government chairmen, and the service chiefs, all of whom made generous contributions to the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem and Appeal Fund.

In closing, the call for empathy and support for war veterans’ families resonates as an enduring reminder of the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s heroes, beckoning for solidarity and care for those who bear the profound impacts of their service.
