APC alleges electoral malpractice in Kano’s by-election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State is seeking spiritual intervention after five women leaders in local councils died under mysterious circumstances. The deaths occurred over a two‑month period, the latest being Mrs. Adebimpe Akinola, a Council Manager in Coker Aguda LCDA, who died on 29 September 2025. This latest loss brings the total to five, heightening fears among female local government officials about their safety and well‑being.

Earlier this year, Lagos State inaugurated newly elected chairmen and vice‑chairmen for its 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, marking the start of a fresh grassroots administration. Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu urged the officials to deliver the dividends of democracy and deepen development at the local level. The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission also presented certificates of return to the winning chairmen and councilors from the local government polls.

The recent spate of deaths, however, has cast a shadow over the newly elected administration. The Lagos APC described the fatalities as painful and shocking and announced the formation of a special committee to investigate the incidents. Party spokesperson Seye Oladejo said the committee will seek to determine the causes of the deaths and recommend measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. In addition to the investigation, prayer interventions are being considered to ward off what is being termed the “spirit of death” across the councils.

As the inquiry proceeds, the APC is awaiting a reasonable mourning period before implementing its intervention plan. The party’s proactive approach aims to address the concerns of female local government officials and ensure their safety. The tragedy underscores the need for greater support and protection for women in public service, especially at the local government level.
