The South African Consulate in Lagos has postponed its Heritage Day celebration originally planned for September 20, 2025, citing a forecast of heavy rain that would disrupt the outdoor event. The consulate, in partnership with Afroflavour, announced the new date as Saturday, October 11, 2025, with the venue shifted to Ibru Gardens on Louis Solomon Close in Victoria Island, Lagos. The celebration will run from noon to 8 p.m.
Organizers said the decision was taken to protect sponsors, partners, vendors, and attendees from weather-related discomfort. Tickets remain on sale through www.naija.events, priced at ₦10,000 for general admission and ₦50,000 for VIP access.
The programme is designed as a cultural bridge between South Africa and Nigeria. Highlights include a simulated “Trip to Cape Town” experience complete with an Afroflavour Passport and boarding pass, a Pan African Culture Market featuring food, Fashion, jewellery, craftsmanship, and art, and a culinary showcase pairing South African staples such as bobotie, bunny chow, and Cape Malay curry with Nigerian delicacies.
Attendees can also pose for photographs at a replica of Shaka Zulu’s throne, a symbol of Zulu heritage and strength. Live performances will spotlight South African jazz and traditional music, while the Afroliganza Fashion Procession, curated by the Lai Labode Heritage Foundation, will present South African designs alongside Nigerian fashion from Yoruba, Urhobo, Hausa, and Igbo traditions.
A Creators Lab will host sideline discussions on culture, food, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. The event will also stage the first “Tripe Love” cookoff, a six-nation culinary competition featuring teams from South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Morocco, and Zimbabwe.
The consulate said it remains committed to delivering a memorable Heritage Day experience and expects a vibrant, well-attended celebration on the rescheduled date.
