U.S. Senators Call for Special Envoy to End Conflict in Sudan

U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Jim Risch have joined forces to introduce a bipartisan resolution aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The resolution, led by Senators Cardin and Risch, calls for the appointment of a high-level special envoy to facilitate the resolution of the Sudanese crisis. This collaborative effort underscores the bipartisan concern for the situation in Sudan and the urgent need for cohesive action.

The resolution, set to be introduced in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, emphasizes the crucial role of a United States Special Envoy for Sudan in advancing efforts to end the conflict. It calls for the development of a comprehensive strategy to sanction the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and those involved in the supply of arms to the belligerents. Additionally, it urges the facilitation of international investigations into atrocities, with a focus on ensuring accountability.

Senator Cardin reiterated the urgency of international intervention, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and pressure all parties involved to cease hostilities. He stressed that the current authorities in Sudan do not represent the will of the people and highlighted the importance of holding accountable those responsible for crimes committed during the conflict. The Senator also emphasized the need to continue supporting the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people and work towards the establishment of a democratic government in the country.

Similarly, Senator Risch emphasized the gravity of the situation in Sudan, calling for robust action to address the suffering, destruction, and crimes taking place. He underscored the importance of the United States, along with its allies and partners, taking decisive steps to end the conflict, provide humanitarian aid, and prevent a full-scale genocide in Darfur. The Senator also made it clear that he has consistently advocated for a special presidential envoy for Sudan and that the joint resolution should serve as a critical signal to the administration regarding the urgent need to revise its Sudan policy.
