The National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity, Ash Montana Deck, has called for significant reforms and systemic changes in the Nigerian educational sector. In a statement released by its Capoon, Adebesin Ayodele, the group emphasized that such changes are essential for achieving a secure, just, and progressive society and future. Ayodele highlighted the urgent need for an educational system that is constructively and productively oriented towards the future, enabling the creation of the society we desire.
Instead of merely adopting educational systems from other countries, the group advocates for the development of a home-grown hybrid educational system and policies tailored to Nigeria’s unique circumstances. The statement underscored the critical role of education, asserting, “Education is essential for a viral society; and without education, there will be no civilisation and no development.” It urged the government and all stakeholders to prioritize education as a matter of urgency, emphasizing its importance for peace and sustainable development.
The group identified several factors contributing to the challenges facing education in Nigeria, including the issue of out-of-school children, a decline in educational development, and a lack of interest in education among the youth. These issues stem from inequality, poverty, insecurity, infrastructure decay, eroding value systems, violence, and an outdated educational system and policies that fail to prepare Nigeria for global competition in an ever-changing world.
In light of these challenges, the group appealed to the government and policymakers to move beyond mere rhetoric and genuinely address the problems plaguing education in Nigeria. They called for sincerity in policy formulation, the fulfillment of promises, and effective implementation. The statement noted that corruption and its widespread effects are central to these issues, asserting that tackling corruption will significantly contribute to resolving the educational crisis. The government is urged to take further action to reduce poverty, improve living standards for families, and enhance infrastructure in schools.
Additionally, the International Day of Education, celebrated globally on January 24, emphasizes the importance of education for global peace and sustainable development. This year, the event was marked by the theme, “To invest in people, prioritise education.” In alignment with this, Ayodele announced that the group adopted the sub-theme, “Reinventing our educational system for a secure and progressive future,” to commemorate the occasion.
