The Nigeria Police Force has successfully completed the training of its officers assigned to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) unit. This training, which focused on established protocols for the safe disposal of explosives and preventive measures ahead of the 2023 general election, received approval from the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba. This initiative is part of his vision to ensure timely and strategic training and retraining of police officers, particularly those with specialized roles.

The Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced the completion of the training in a statement obtained by our correspondent on Sunday. Following the training, a quarterly conference was held for commanders and heads of EOD formations across the country. During this conference, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the unit, Zannah Shettima, represented the Inspector-General at the EOD annex office located on Bank Anthony Way in Ikeja, Lagos State. At the event, contemporary gadgets were distributed, which had been donated by the United Nations’ Mine Action Service and the United States Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence, among others procured through the Special Intervention Fund of the Inspector-General. The gadgets included pack eye backpack radiation detectors, electronic control measure frequency jammers, thermo-scientific RIIDEye, Viken detection Nighthawk, thermo-scientific First Defender, and F3 mine lab deep mine detectors.

In his address, the Inspector-General emphasized the leadership and coordination roles assigned to the Nigeria Police Force in the internal security architecture and election security management in Nigeria. He directed Commissioners of Police and their respective supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General in the zonal commands to maintain ongoing engagement with the military and other security agencies that are recognized members of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security. This collaboration aims to solidify the operational orders and deployment strategies established for the smooth and peaceful conduct of the 2023 general election.

Furthermore, the Inspector-General assured that the Nigeria Police Force has implemented proactive measures to ensure the thorough sweeping of strategic locations, thereby preventing the importation of CBRN materials and high-yield explosives into public spaces. Additionally, EOD-CBRN personnel stationed at all entry and exit points of the country have been placed on high alert to vigilantly prevent the illegal importation of explosive materials.
