Former governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani, has articulated his support for Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate for the 2023 general election. Nnamani contends that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has violated its constitution by preventing the South from having the opportunity to run for the presidency. He emphasized that the PDP’s constitution mandates the rotation of key political offices between the North and South to promote equity, justice, and fairness.
Recently, reports surfaced regarding Nnamani’s suspension from the PDP, along with other party leaders in Ekiti and Imo states, due to alleged anti-party activities. In a statement released on Sunday and shared with journalists in Abuja, Nnamani highlighted the importance of sharing and rotating key political offices among the diverse populations of Nigeria. He pointed out that the PDP constitution explicitly commits to the policy of rotation and zoning of party and public elective offices to uphold the principles of equity, justice, and fairness.
Nnamani recalled that during the 2019 elections, the PDP allowed the North to contest the presidential primary in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where Atiku Abubakar secured the ticket. He noted that it was anticipated that the PDP would similarly permit the South to contest for the presidency in 2023. However, he expressed disappointment that, contrary to expectations and amid alleged political maneuvering, Atiku once again obtained the ticket.
The former governor remarked that the outcome of the presidential primary angered southern PDP supporters, including the G-5 governors, who insisted on adhering to the North-South rotation principle. He described the PDP’s actions as unjust and lacking in equity, asserting that it is morally wrong to maintain power in the North following the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in 2023. Nnamani noted that Buhari recognized the importance of the North-South power rotation by creating a political balance that allowed Bola Tinubu to emerge as the presidential candidate.
After carefully assessing the situation, Nnamani declared Tinubu as his preferred candidate from the South for the upcoming election, emphasizing the necessity for political harmony that ensures all regions of Nigeria feel included and represented.
