Kebbi Rep Aspirant Optimistic About 2024 Budget’s Impact on Tackling Northern Insecurity

Abubakar Jibrin Yakubu, a contender for the All Progressives Congress in the bye-election for Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency of Kebbi State, anticipates positive outcomes in addressing Northern Nigeria’s insecurity through the allocation of N285 billion to the Ministry of Defence in the 2024 budget. Yakubu’s remarks came during a discussion with press representatives in Abuja. His bid is for the impending election to fill the seat formerly held by Sununu Yusufu, Minister of State for Education.

Yakubu emphasized the need for the federal government to elevate the security landscape across the nation. Expressing his viewpoint on the issue, he advocated for fortified support to strengthen the Nigerian Police force, believing it to be pivotal in addressing the prevalent security challenges.

According to Yakubu, reinforcing the Nigerian Police force holds prominence over the proposition of establishing state police, a concept he believes has potential for misuse by state governments and other entities within the state. He articulated, “The reason people are against the call for state policing is the possibility of abuse by the state governments and other people in the state. State police is a nice idea, but the challenge most people foresee is the possibility of abuse of power.”

Yakubu also urged the government to address the inherent problems within the Nigerian Police, advocating for a thorough examination of prevailing issues and the implementation of pertinent recommendations.

Commending the expeditious approval of the N28.7 trillion 2024 Appropriation Bill by the National Assembly, Yakubu lauded the swift endorsement by President Bola Tinubu on Monday. This budget allocation incites hope for a concerted effort to alleviate the pervasive insecurity plaguing the northern regions of Nigeria.
