The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has taken a bold stride by increasing the prize money for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire 2023. According to CAF’s official website, the winner of the tournament will now walk away with a staggering seven million dollars, marking a substantial 40% increment from the previous prize money.

In this groundbreaking move, the runner-up is set to receive an impressive 4 million dollars. Moreover, the two semi-finalists can look forward to a substantial reward of 2.5 million dollars each, while the four quarter-finalists will each be granted 1.3 million dollars.

Patrice Motsepe, the President of CAF, expressed his satisfaction with the development, stating, “CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the prize money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions.” He further emphasized the positive impact of this boost, indicating that it will not only nourish the growth of football but also benefit all the football stakeholders and assist member associations in their administrative endeavors.

The 2023 AFCON, slated to commence on January 13th and culminate on February 11th in Cote d’Ivoire, will feature an intense competition among 24 participating nations.

This notable shift in prize money not only serves as an incentive for teams competing in the AFCON but also foregrounds CAF’s commitment to enhancing the tournament’s prestige and elevating the African football landscape as a whole.
