The Ebonyi State chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the Nigeria Police, DSS, and other security agencies to ramp up security measures in the Ebonyi South senatorial zone as the party prepares for a crucial bye-election.

The bye-election was necessitated by the vacancy in the Senate following the resignation of Senator David Umahi, who represented Ebonyi South senatorial zone, to assume the position of Minister of Works.

In a bid to fill this vacant seat, the APC conducted a 5-man delegate election to determine its senatorial candidate on Friday. Stanley Okoro Emegha, the State Chairman of APC, emphasized the party’s commitment to holding a fresh election to ensure the emergence of an APC Senator for Ebonyi South zone. He underlined that the delegate election was an internal matter of the party and assured that a robust security architecture, including the police, DSS, and other law enforcement agencies, had been put in place to guarantee a smooth and trouble-free poll.

“The police and DSS are on the ground to ensure the smooth conduct of the election. Remember, it’s an internal affair. We have always used dialogue to come up with our stand as a party,” Emegha stated.

Responding to the developments, Mr Smart Iheazor, the Chairman of the 7-man Screening and Special Congress Committee, clarified that two party members in the state had purchased the election form. “We have commenced action immediately. We screened the candidates that have purchased the form for the election. Two persons purchased the form, but only one returned the completed form, while the second person didn’t return the form,” he added.

The call for enhanced security in the run-up to the bye-election highlights the significance of this political event and the need for a secure and transparent electoral process as the APC strives to fill the vacant Senate seat in Ebonyi South zone.
