Nigerian Leadership Coach Accuses Electoral Commission of Hindering Democracy
Adetokunbo Olufela Durotoye, a prominent leadership coach and political activist, has criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for being a major obstacle to democracy in Nigeria. In a recent interview, Durotoye alleged that INEC deliberately suppresses voter participation to protect the interests of the political establishment.
According to Durotoye, INEC’s administrative procedures are designed to prevent Nigerians from freely participating in elections, making it the biggest barrier to democracy in the country. He argued that the electoral system is structured to frustrate voters, particularly those outside the establishment who pose a threat to entrenched political interests.
Durotoye specifically criticized the continued use of the Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC), stating that it is no longer necessary with advanced technology. He claimed that the PVC is used to limit voter turnout rather than protect the vote. Additionally, he faulted the voter registration process, describing it as slow, inefficient, and unfriendly, especially to young Nigerians.
The leadership coach also raised concerns about the lack of accountability within INEC, noting that officials accused of electoral misconduct are rarely punished. He emphasized that until individuals are held accountable and prosecuted for compromising elections, nothing will change.
Durotoye further warned that Nigeria is drifting towards a one-party system due to mass defections by politicians, which could lead to weaker accountability and fewer meaningful choices for voters. Despite these challenges, he predicted that a growing citizens’ movement, driven by previously non-voting Nigerians, would eventually overwhelm even the most compromised systems.
The comments come as Nigeria continues to grapple with electoral reform and democratic consolidation. With the country’s electoral system facing numerous challenges, Durotoye’s criticisms highlight the need for urgent reforms to ensure the integrity and credibility of the electoral process. As Nigeria looks to future elections, the role of INEC in ensuring free and fair polls will be closely watched by citizens and international observers alike.
