In a recent statement, Ibrahim Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), exuded confidence in Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, as strong contenders for victory in the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) championship.

Addressing journalists in Ikom LGA in central Cross River State during a Thanksgiving Service, Gusau expressed optimism about Nigeria’s prospects in the 2024 AFCON. He emphasized the extensive preparations undertaken to ensure the team’s readiness for the tournament, attributing the Federal Government’s cooperation in meeting the team’s requirements.

The AFCON, originally scheduled for the previous year, was rescheduled to commence on January 13, 2024, in Cote d’Ivoire.

Gusau declared, “Our chances at the upcoming AFCON are very bright. We have done much to prepare our national football team well for the continental football fiesta. Government has so far approved what we requested to enable us to have a strong participation at the Nations’ Cup. So we are confident that we are ready to outperform other competitors.”

Highlighting the team’s composition, Gusau expressed faith in the 25 young and talented players chosen to represent Nigeria, underscoring their preparedness to bring honor to the nation. He also solicited the support of Nigerians through prayer, underscoring the significance of collective encouragement for the team’s success.

Furthermore, he touched upon efforts to overhaul the NFF comprehensively with the aim of strengthening Nigeria’s position in premier and other leagues. “We’re still trying our best to clear the backlog of what we met. With what we are doing in the less than two years, we hope to completely sanitize the system to consolidate our winning chances at all continental championships and better our leagues,” he affirmed.
