The Presidency has shed light on the ongoing investigation into a financial irregularity involving a substantial transfer of N585.189 million by Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has assured that appropriate action will be taken once the investigation is concluded.
Edu’s involvement in diverting about N585.189 million, intended for the vulnerable in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states, into a private account has triggered widespread outrage and demands for her dismissal and prosecution. A document signed by Edu and addressed to the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, directing the disbursement of the funds into a private account belonging to Bridget Mojisola Oniyelu, has gone viral.
The leaked document exposed the transfer of the money into Oniyelu’s account, fueling public outcry. In response to the outrage, Edu’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Rasheed Zubair, released a statement asserting that the payment followed due process. However, the Presidency has affirmed that the matter is under thorough investigation and that appropriate action will follow thereafter.
The scandal has raised concerns about financial misconduct and the misuse of public funds, prompting heightened scrutiny and public interest. As the investigation unfolds, the international community awaits the outcome, eager for transparency, accountability, and justice in the resolution of this significant case.
