The Nigerian government’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has announced a special intervention to support the most vulnerable households in Borno affected by the 2022/23 flood. With a focus on sustainable socio-economic resilience, the Federal Government’s Special National Economic and Livelihood Emergency Intervention (SNELEI) aims to provide crucial support to 15,000 households in need.

NEMA’s Director General, Mustapha Habib, revealed that 660,884 households have been selected and verified to benefit from the intervention nationwide. The initiative includes the distribution of food and non-food items, as well as agricultural inputs and livelihood support such as grinding and sewing machines.

The intervention also emphasizes the importance of responsible usage, with NEMA officials urging beneficiaries to maximize the resources provided for their recovery process, rather than selling them off. Collaborating with State Emergency Management Agencies and other relevant stakeholders, NEMA has deployed personnel to ensure the effective verification and distribution of aid to the targeted households.

Local government authorities, including the Chairmen of Hawul, Maiduguri Metropolitan, and Chibok, have expressed appreciation for the government’s involvement in the distribution process. They highlighted the significance of local engagement in ensuring that the items reach the intended beneficiaries in rural areas.

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno commended the Federal Government for the intervention, acknowledging its potential to empower the affected households. Stressing his administration’s dedication to the success of such interventions, Governor Zulum reiterated the goal of enhancing citizens’ livelihoods in the aftermath of disasters in the state.

The initiative represents a commitment to building a more resilient nation, with the government actively addressing the needs of vulnerable communities impacted by natural disasters. As the intervention takes root, it is poised to make a tangible difference in the lives of those striving to recover and rebuild in the wake of the devastating flood.
