Sa’adatu Ayuba, a woman from Dei-Dei, has made a heartfelt plea at the Grade I Area Court for the dissolution of her 27-year marriage to Jalija, citing alleged impotence as the reason behind her decision. The couple tied the knot in 1997 following Islamic law and have been blessed with five children, aged 25, 22, 14, nine, and seven.
The petitioner, who entered into the sacred union at the age of 16, expressed her anguish over her husband’s extramarital affair, stating, “Since two years ago, I have been having misunderstandings with him because he got a girlfriend outside our marriage.” She expressed her exhaustion with the situation and stressed her desire for justice through a divorce.
In contrast, Jalija vehemently denied the allegations of having a girlfriend, asserting that he had married another woman and was fulfilling his duties as a husband. He explained, “I married another wife and I am performing perfectly as a man, the lady I married has one child for me, we got married in her village.”
However, Sa’adatu Ayuba refuted her husband’s claim, contending that the woman in question was, indeed, his girlfriend. She professed her ignorance regarding his second marriage and disputed his assertions.
Presiding over the case, Judge Saminu Suleiman encouraged the couple to find an amicable resolution and granted them one week for this purpose. The case has been adjourned until January 17 for further progress.
This emotional plea for dissolution highlights the complexity of marital relationships and the toll that extramarital affairs can take on individuals and families. As this saga unfolds, the pursuit of justice will determine the future for Sa’adatu Ayuba and Jalija, setting a precedent for the sanctity of marriage and individual rights.
