Nigerian Government Intensifies Relief Efforts and Activates Emergency Response

The Nigerian government has escalated its efforts in providing aid to those affected by the recent crisis in Plateau, donating relief materials to over 32,000 displaced individuals. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) made the donation in fulfillment of President Bola Tinubu’s directive to mitigate the impact of the attacks on the victims’ livelihoods.

Eugene Nyelong, NEMA North Central Zonal Coordinator, represented the Director-General and emphasized the provision of relief support in the form of food, non-food items, and medical assistance, earmarked for distribution in Internal Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and various communities. Additionally, an Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) has been activated, uniting all sectors to further enhance the delivery of assistance to the affected areas.

Collaboration with the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the World Health Organization (WHO) is underway, affirming the collective commitment to supporting the victims. SEMA Executive Secretary, Sunday Abdu, praised the tireless support from NEMA, UNICEF, WHO, and other stakeholders, assuring that the materials would be allocated exclusively to those impacted by the attacks.

Expressing gratitude, Monday Kassah, Chairman of Bokkos Local Government, lauded the swift response of the president and NEMA, underscoring the significant assistance provided to the affected populace. Kassah affirmed the community’s willingness to collaborate with state and federal authorities to prevent a recurrence of the incident.

The donated items encompassed essential supplies such as rice, beans, garri, powdered milk, milo, tomato paste, seasoning cubes, salt, vegetable oil, and palm oil. With a total of 12 IDP camps being managed in the local government area through concerted efforts involving NEMA, SEMA, UNICEF, WHO, the Nigerian Red Cross, and other stakeholders, the relief operation aims to address the pressing needs of the displaced populace.

As the government intensifies relief and emergency response efforts, the collective hope is for sustained security and concerted endeavors to prevent future tragedies. By activating the EOC and coordinating with diverse stakeholders, the Nigerian government continues to demonstrate its commitment to addressing humanitarian crises and safeguarding the welfare of its citizens.
