An Ebubeagu operative, Ajasm Aja, was shot dead by a colleague over a dispute involving N1,000 in Ebonyi State. Aja and his assailant were part of the Ebubeagu team assigned to Isu Community in the Onicha Local Government Area to provide security for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship rally on Saturday. Following the event, the team was instructed to retrieve and secure the party’s flags for upcoming rallies. During this process, an altercation erupted between Aja and his colleague over the small amount of money.

Reports indicate that Aja attempted to retrieve his pump-action rifle during the confrontation. However, his colleague reacted quickly, drawing a pistol and shooting Aja in the head, resulting in his immediate death. A community source, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted the events of Saturday, January 28, 2023, stating that the APC rally took place at Isu, the council headquarters of Onicha LGA. After the rally, members of Ebubeagu and the G-24 group were tasked with collecting the party’s flags in preparation for future events.

The source described how Aja, who had recently been sworn in as the Supervisory Councillor for Health in the Onicha council area, became involved in a heated argument with a fellow member. As tensions escalated, Aja aimed his pump-action rifle at his colleague. In a swift response, the other member drew his pistol and shot Aja in the forehead, causing him to fall and die instantly.

When contacted for comment, Mr. Friday Nnana-Ujor, the Ebubeagu Commander in Ebonyi State, clarified that the attacker was not an operative of the South-East security outfit. He revealed that the assailant was a suspected gunman who also carried a pump-action gun, similar to those used by Ebubeagu members. Nnana-Ujor stated, “No, it was not an Ebubeagu person that shot him. That incident was stage-managed; it was people who were hiding behind a Sienna bus that killed him. The person responsible was sent to do so. Many believe it was an Ebubeagu personnel who committed the act, but that is not true.” He emphasized that no Ebubeagu member was permitted to carry arms to the rally, as per a prior decision made in a meeting. Nnana-Ujor assured that an investigation is underway and that the culprit will be apprehended soon, urging the public to remain patient and not to jump to conclusions about the political implications of the incident.
