The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), addressed concerns regarding the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency during a luncheon held in his honor at the Kano Government House on Monday. He alleged that some foreign elements may be involved in using Boko Haram to undermine the country. Buhari expressed his disappointment that the insurgency has hindered Nigeria from fully exploiting its resources in the Lake Chad Basin, despite the nation’s wealth of natural resources.
Recalling the extent of the insurgency, Buhari noted that Boko Haram had taken control of 17 out of 27 local government areas in Borno State, and that half of Yobe State was also under their influence. He raised suspicions about the involvement of an international group aiming to destabilize Nigeria, questioning the rationale behind the notion that Western education could be considered “haram.”
In his remarks, Buhari emphasized the importance of fighting for the nation’s integrity against groups intent on destruction. He expressed gratitude for the support he has received from Nigerians, stating that they have shown solidarity with him as he has with them. Further details on the matter will be provided later.
