The Federal Government has narrowed the candidates vying for the position of Accountant-General of the Federation to seven finalists. These candidates were selected from a pool of 20 directors who had previously been cleared by anti-corruption agencies to compete for the vacant role. In the initial assessment conducted by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, 10 out of the 20 shortlisted directors failed to meet the required standard, scoring below 50 percent. This left 10 directors who successfully passed the first stage of the examination.
On January 25, 2023, the 10 qualified directors advanced to the second stage, which tested their proficiency in Information Communication Technology. Following this assessment, three directors did not pass, resulting in seven candidates remaining in contention for the position. These seven finalists then participated in the final stage of the examination, which consisted of an oral interview held last Thursday. A circular dated January 25, 2023, and signed by Dr. Ernest Umakhikhe on behalf of the examination committee, invited the successful candidates to this oral interview stage.
The oral interview marked the conclusion of the selection process for the new Accountant-General. The Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation is expected to announce the results of the oral interview and the appointment of the new Accountant-General shortly. This vacancy arose following the arrest of the former Accountant-General, Ahmed Idris, in July 2022, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission due to alleged misappropriation of N109 billion, which led to his suspension and prosecution.
The 20 shortlisted candidates who participated in the selection process included Danladi Comfort from Gombe (Interior), Mohammed Yar’Abba from Sokoto (Fire Service), Mufutau Bukola from Oyo (Transportation), Mahmud Kambari from Borno (North East Development Commission), Mohammed Dojo from Gombe (Interior), and Waziri Samuel from Borno (Agriculture and Rural Development). Other candidates included Maiden Sakirat from Ogun (OHCSF), Adaramoye Oluwole from Ekiti (Humanitarian Affairs), Isa Abubakar from Yobe (Science, Technology and Innovation), Ogunsemowo Olakunle from Ogun (Environment), Egbokhale Charity from Edo (NFF), Ibrahim Jibo from Kano (National Boundary Commission), Ogbodo Nnam from Enugu (National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission), and Bakare Juliannah from Ekiti (NPF).
