The Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has called on the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to conduct local government elections in accordance with the constitution.
During a visit to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) by members of the Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), Okocha emphasized the impending expiration of the tenure of the serving Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen in a few months. He urged the state government to initiate the election process and provide advanced notification to parties, as required by law.
Okocha conveyed the APC’s readiness to participate in the LGA election and highlighted the party’s commitment to not boycott the elections, citing a Supreme Court pronouncement that the use of caretaker arrangements in local governments is improper.
Expressing confidence in the leadership of RSIEC, headed by Adolphus Enebeli, a retired Justice of the Rivers State High Court, Okocha’s call for timely LGA elections underscores the party’s stance against prolonged caretaker arrangements and advocates for upholding constitutional mandates.
The APC’s appeal to Governor Fubara serves as a pivotal push for democratic governance, reflecting the party’s determination to actively engage in the electoral process while demanding adherence to legal provisions.
