Yisa Usman, a former Deputy Director at the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has taken legal action against the board, filing a N150 million lawsuit over alleged wrongful dismissal. In a suit dated Sept. 29, 2023, and filed at the National Industrial Court in Abuja by his lawyer, Oseini Bamigbaye, Usman sought nine reliefs in his case against JAMB.
The crux of Usman’s argument lies in challenging the constitution of the Board’s Directorate Staff Disciplinary Committee, which he claims was irregular and did not comply with the Board’s Staff Manual and Conditions of Service. Furthermore, he contends that the composition of the committee, primarily comprising individuals whom he had exposed for infractions, rendered it unconstitutional and void. Usman asserts that his right to fair hearing was compromised, and his subsequent dismissal by the board was therefore unlawful and void.
His petition to the court includes a plea to set aside his dismissal and reinstate him to his position with full entitlements and benefits. Additionally, Usman seeks compensation for the emotional and psychological distress caused by the alleged wrongful actions of JAMB.
In his statement, Usman highlights his long-standing service and progression within JAMB, positioning himself as a dedicated and qualified professional whose integrity led him to oppose corrupt practices within the organization. He emphasizes that his commitment to transparency and accountability resulted in conflicts with the management, particularly the Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede.
Usman’s claims are supported by documented evidence, including numerous letters to government agencies outlining infractions and violations within JAMB. He also alleges that his attempts to raise concerns led to unwarranted transfers and, ultimately, legal charges against him.
Justice Osatohanmwen Obaseki-Osaghae has scheduled the next hearing for March 11, stressing the importance of JAMB’s representation in court. Meanwhile, the ongoing trial related to the alleged threats made by Usman maintains a parallel legal battle to address the dismissal from JAMB.
The case reflects a clash between an individual’s dedication to upholding principles of transparency and accountability and the alleged actions of an institution to suppress dissent. As the legal proceedings unfold, they serve as a reminder of the complexities that arise at the intersection of ethical practices, organizational policies, and individual rights.
