A former Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Professor Ibrahim Umar, has passed away. His son, Farouk Ibrahim Umar, confirmed the news to reporters on Monday. The burial rites for the esteemed physicist are scheduled to take place at Kofar Kudu at 10 am on Tuesday.
Professor Umar served as the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano from 1979 to 1986, making him the third head of the institution. His contributions to the field extended beyond the university; he was a member of the Nigerian delegation to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference beginning in 1989. That same year, he was appointed Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria.
In addition to his roles in academia and government, Professor Umar served as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the IAEA from 2000 to 2001. In 2004, he became the Director of the Centre for Energy Research and Training, which houses Nigeria’s first research nuclear reactor. His last known appointment was in 2007, when he participated in the international advisory committee for a workshop on Renewable Energy for Sustainable Development in Africa, held at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
