Nigeria Police Affirm Strict Ban on Same-Sex Marriage, Warn of Legal Consequences

The Nigeria Police reaffirmed the country’s stringent prohibition of same-sex marriage, emphasizing that such acts are punishable under Nigerian law. ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, clarified that recent social media posts promoting activities perceived as unnatural were in violation of the country’s laws.

Adejobi underscored that unnatural offenses, including carnal knowledge contrary to the order of nature, are prohibited under Sections 214 to 217 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act in the Southern States. Additionally, Section 284 of the Nigerian Penal Code, applicable in the Northern region, also criminalizes such acts, reinforcing their illegality.

Furthermore, the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014 explicitly criminalizes the solemnization, operation, and public display of same-sex marriages. Adejobi urged the public to comprehend and adhere to these laws, cautioning that any infractions would result in due legal processes.

Emphasizing the police’s unwavering commitment to upholding law and order, Adejobi urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to unnatural offenses or same-sex marriage, thereby aiding law enforcement in enforcing these laws.

He called for a unified effort to combat same-sex marriage and implored parents and guardians to support the police in eradicating such practices.

This statement from the Nigeria Police serves as a significant reminder of the country’s firm stance against same-sex marriage and highlights the legal measures in place to address violations.
