The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), announced on Tuesday that Nigeria has achieved 100 percent broadband penetration across the country. This declaration was made during the inaugural Digital Economy Conference organized by the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, held at the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry complex. Speaking on behalf of the President, the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isah Patami, dismissed previous reports claiming that Nigeria had only reached 43 percent broadband penetration, labeling them as outdated.
Buhari highlighted that Nigeria stands out among the 54 African countries for its impressive broadband penetration. He stated, “As I speak to you today, the broadband penetration in Nigeria is 100 percent.” He elaborated that the Federal Government had significantly increased broadband coverage from 23 percent in 2019 to the current 100 percent in 2023, marking a remarkable growth of 77 percent. “As of today, broadband can be accessed everywhere in the country, whether in urban areas, rural areas, or even deserts. We are the first African country to attain this milestone and the only one so far,” the President emphasized.
Additionally, Buhari revealed that the revenue generated by the communication ministry has seen substantial growth, increasing from N51 billion in three months to N408 billion in the same period. John Udeagbala, the National President of NACCIMA, noted that the conference aimed to promote the technology ecosystem, explore the potential of the digital economy for job creation, and identify existing opportunities within Nigeria’s tech industry.
