The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has issued a weather forecast predicting a period of dust haze lasting from Tuesday to Thursday, impacting various regions of the country.
According to NiMet’s outlook released on Monday in Abuja, the northern region is expected to experience thick dust haze, leading to significantly reduced horizontal visibility to 1km or less on Tuesday. Similarly, the North Central region and South will likely encounter moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility ranging from 1km to 3km, and localized visibility of 1km or less during this period.
Moving to Wednesday, NiMet anticipates the continuation of thick dust haze in the northern region and North Central states, causing horizontal visibility to drop to 1km or less. Meanwhile, the Inland region and coastal areas of the South are expected to experience moderate dust haze with similar visibility conditions.
On Thursday, NiMet foresees thick to moderate dust haze affecting the North and North Central regions, with horizontal visibility decreasing to 1km or less. In the Inland region of the South, similar moderate dust haze conditions with visibility ranging from 1km to 3km are expected throughout the forecast period.
In addition to the dust haze, NiMet also advised residents to be mindful of early morning mist or fog patches over the coastal areas of the South, with patches of cloud in a hazy atmosphere later in the day. They also emphasized the suspension of dust particles in the air and recommended the use of face masks, especially for individuals with respiratory issues. Cautionary measures, such as wearing warm clothing at night and moisturizing the skin and lips, were urged for children, the elderly, and the general populace.
Furthermore, NiMet directed airline operators to stay informed with updated weather reports and forecasts to facilitate effective planning for their operations.
The agency’s advisory serves as a proactive measure to alert and prepare the Nigerian populace for the impending weather conditions, ensuring that they take necessary precautions to safeguard their well-being and daily activities.
