A few weeks before the general election, members and leaders from several major political parties in Ondo State have defected to the Labour Party (LP). These defectors include individuals from the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) within the Akoko South-East/Akoko South-West Federal Constituency. The event, which took place in Isua Akoko, the headquarters of the Akoko South-East Local Government Area, also featured a declaration of support for the LP’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.

One of the prominent leaders among the defectors, Mr. Stephen Adeyeri, a former House of Representatives aspirant from the APC, expressed that Obi’s impressive track record and his comprehensive manifesto addressing the nation’s numerous challenges motivated him and his supporters to join the Labour Party. Adeyeri firmly endorsed Obi, predicting a landslide victory for him. He emphasized that Nigerians are disillusioned with the two major political parties, the PDP and the APC, which he believes have failed in their governance. He asserted that the Labour Party represents the only viable alternative.

Adeyeri stated, “Obi is the candidate to beat because he has proven to be competent among other candidates. His records during his tenure in Anambra are well-documented; he achieved success through hard work, not deceit.” He committed to promoting Obi’s candidacy to his supporters, highlighting the importance of electing a leader who can transition the country from a state of consumption to one of production. He argued that a capable leader is essential for improving the nation’s fortunes, asserting that issues such as fuel scarcity, electricity shortages, and hunger would soon be resolved if Peter Obi is elected president. Adeyeri cautioned against allowing those who have perpetuated poverty to regain power and urged supporters to vote for all Labour Party candidates in the upcoming election.

Earlier, Mr. Agabje Abiodun, the LP’s state secretary, welcomed the defectors from the APC, PDP, and SDP into the party. He encouraged them to actively campaign for the LP throughout the state. Abiodun pointed out that the immediate past Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, had performed commendably while in office under the Labour Party from 2009 to 2014, and he stressed that the party should be supported based on its past achievements. He remarked, “The Labour Party is the only rapidly growing party in Nigeria; we can see how people are flocking to join Obi’s movement. When Mimiko was governor, his performance stands in stark contrast to the current administration, which has failed to meet the people’s expectations. People are tired of the present situation. As Adeyeri has mentioned, residents are suffering from fuel shortages and skyrocketing food prices, and even APC members are lamenting the unbearable hardship.”
