Alhassan Bawu, the campaign director for the Bauchi State Labour Party, has announced his defection from the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to support Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This decision comes just three weeks before the presidential election scheduled for February 25.
In a statement to journalists on Tuesday in Bauchi, Bawu explained that his shift to the PDP was motivated by a realization among him and other Labour Party leaders in the North-East that their votes for Obi might be wasted. He emphasized that the defectors believe Atiku possesses the capability to lead Nigeria effectively.
Bawu pointed out that the Labour Party lacks a solid structure at the ward, local, and state levels, which influenced their choice to join the PDP. He stated, “We believe the LP is not strong enough to win a single seat in the North-East.” He further declared, “We are officially announcing that all the North-East executives of the Labour Party are defecting to the PDP to support Atiku.” Bawu concluded by expressing their desire not to waste their votes, asserting the importance of mobilizing support for a candidate who has the potential to win the election.
