The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) issued a warning to broadcasters on Wednesday, urging them to adhere to the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code and other relevant regulations governing election coverage in Nigeria. NBC Director-General Balarabe Ilelah emphasized the importance of compliance, advising broadcasters to refrain from allowing their facilities to be used by politicians and their supporters for content that could incite lawlessness.
In the statement, Ilelah expressed deep concern over the disregard for ethics and standards by politicians who exploit broadcast media platforms. He highlighted that such actions contravene the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which mandates broadcasters to avoid hate speech, inflammatory remarks, and any content that is derogatory or divisive when producing news and current affairs programs.
Furthermore, the commission noted that some stations have begun to glamorize these troubling situations on their platforms. The NBC reiterated that any station found in violation of these guidelines would face consequences for their professional misconduct.
