The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has voiced support for the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in its actions against 11 Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos). NERC imposed a N10.5 billion fine on the DisCos for arbitrary billing of unmetered customers and failure to comply with the capping of estimated bills.
Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, the Acting Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, issued a statement in Abuja on Monday, urging NERC to consider stronger measures to prevent future violations. These measures may entail increased financial penalties, stricter enforcement mechanisms, and even the revocation of operating licenses for persistent offenders, aligning with the commission’s mandate. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, FCCPA, 2018, empowers the Commission to protect consumers and demand redress from unfair practices by companies, firms, trade associations, or individuals.
Mr. Abdullahi emphasized FCCPC’s solidarity with NERC in safeguarding unmetered customers from arbitrary billing by DisCos. He reiterated the commission’s commitment to ensuring fairer treatment for consumers without meters, supporting the enforcement of the capping regulation as a significant step in this direction.
FCCPC reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to improving the electricity consumers’ situation in Nigeria, including the resolution of electricity consumer complaints and organizing consumer platforms nationwide. These platforms offer opportunities for consumers to voice their grievances and receive prompt responses and redress from DisCos and regulators, including the FCCPC.
Mr. Abdullahi emphasized the necessity of fundamental reforms to address systemic challenges in the sector, such as metering gaps, billing malpractices, and inadequate customer service. He encouraged consumers who have faced issues with estimated bills to file complaints with their DisCos and escalate the matter to NERC or the FCCPC if not satisfactorily resolved, assuring that all legitimate complaints would be investigated with the aim of securing redress for consumers.
This move highlights a significant step toward enhancing consumer protection and holding electricity distribution companies accountable for their actions. Through collaborative and stringent measures, the Nigerian regulatory bodies are working towards ensuring fair treatment and protection for electricity consumers in the country.
