Former Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart has expressed doubts about Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey’s suitability for Ajax. Bassey, who joined Ajax for a club record £19.6 million (€23 million) from Glasgow Rangers last summer, has had a challenging season. The 23-year-old initially received ample playing time under former manager Alfred Schreuder, starting 16 league matches and scoring one goal. However, under interim manager John Heitinga, Bassey found himself on the bench as Ajax, struggling in the league, managed to secure their first win in five games with a 4-1 victory over Excelsior at the Van Donge and De Roo Stadion.

Van der Vaart is among the growing number of critics who have pointed out Bassey’s difficulties in adapting to Dutch football since his transfer. He questioned Bassey’s ability to lead Ajax’s defense, asking, “How is someone who played for Glasgow Rangers like Calvin Bassey going to be able to lead the defence at Ajax? Where was the Ajax youth system? Was there no one there better than him? Because if there isn’t, then you have a major problem.” He further commented on the club’s financial decisions, suggesting that sometimes it is better not to spend excessively, as it can lead to hasty choices. “Instead, they spent €23 million on Bassey. Alfred Schreuder made too many big mistakes,” Van der Vaart stated in an interview with the Daily Record.

As Bassey continues to face scrutiny, he has a significant challenge ahead of him. He must prove to both Heitinga and Ajax fans that he is worth the hefty transfer fee and deserving of a starting position at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
