The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to unite following Wednesday’s Supreme Court judgment. In a statement issued on the same day, the governor emphasized that the ruling has finally resolved the prolonged legal dispute regarding the candidates who will represent the PDP in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 25 and March 11, 2023. He stated, “As the leader of the party in the state, I implore all members to consider this development as the end of all strife within the Edo PDP and to note that this is a victory for all members. Our resolve now is to win the forthcoming general elections, as this experience has made us stronger and better prepared to clinch victory.”

Governor Obaseki highlighted that the recent disagreements, which have now been amicably resolved, demonstrate the maturity of party members who have accepted the court’s verdict. He remarked, “As there are no victors or vanquished in this issue, I want to call on all members of our party to come together to speak with one voice against the real opponents, since our party is big enough to accommodate our various interests.”

He also addressed the ongoing crisis in the nation, attributing it to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he believes is subjecting Nigerians to some of the most difficult living conditions since the Civil War between 1967 and 1970. The governor stressed the importance of focusing efforts on removing the APC from power and restoring the country. “I, therefore, call on all our members in Edo State to stand up and be counted among the brave party men and women who are committed to this vital task of rescuing Nigeria and pulling it back from the precipice,” he added.

The Supreme Court, in its session on Wednesday, dismissed an appeal filed by the Dan Orbih faction of the PDP in Edo State. The five-member panel determined that the appeal, submitted by Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, was incompetent, as it was based on issues that did not arise from the judgment of the appellate court. Consequently, Justice Centus Nweze delivered the judgment, dismissing the appeal on the grounds of incompetence.
