Resolution Introduced to Condemn Genocide in Sudan

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators have introduced a resolution condemning the atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied militia in Sudan’s Darfur region against non-Arab ethnic communities, including acts that amount to genocide.

Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Ben Cardin, expressed grave concern over the heinous atrocities committed in Darfur. He urged African leaders to swiftly condemn these crimes and establish a means to protect civilians from further atrocities. Additionally, he called on the Biden Administration to appoint a High-Level Special Envoy to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and work towards a diplomatic solution.

Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Jim Risch, emphasized the need for the United States to take decisive action to end the conflict and genocide in Darfur. He urged holding the belligerents accountable and supporting the Sudanese people in their efforts to lead the country.

The RSF have been engaged in ruthless conflict with the Sudan Armed Forces since April 2023, with a particular campaign to eliminate non-Arab ethnic communities in Darfur. Secretary of State Blinken determined that the RSF and allied militia had engaged in crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing.

The resolution aims to address the urgent need to halt the atrocities and bring the perpetrators to justice.
