The Kuteb Yatso of Nigeria (KYN), representing the Kuteb nation in Taraba State, has issued a heartfelt plea to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu concerning the ongoing kingship dispute at the Ukwe Palace in Takum, Taraba State.

In a letter signed by KYN’s President, Emmanuel Ukwen, the organization expressed distress over the erosion of their traditional leadership by the current government. The letter, addressed to President Tinubu, outlines the historical and cultural significance of the Kuteb tribe and its traditional rulership in Takum.

The Kuteb people, recognized as the original inhabitants of Takum, have a rich heritage that dates back to the Sixteenth Century. Amidst the diverse tribal landscape of Takum, the Kutebs have sustained their unique cultural identity and governance through the Ukwe (King) institution.

However, the Kuteb community faces a critical challenge as external pressures seek to alter their traditional leadership structure. The letter highlights a contentious historical order, issued in 1975, which attempted to modify the composition of ruling families in Takum. This maneuver, influenced by external interests, has sparked prolonged unrest and turmoil within the community.

The KYN emphasizes the exclusive right of the Kuteb tribe to the Ukwe Takum Stool and appeals to modern principles of liberty and democracy, advocating for the protection of indigenous rights and cultures as affirmed by international norms.

Furthermore, the Kuteb community has selected Prince Rimamnyang Habu Ahmadu as the new Ukwe Takum in accordance with their native customs and awaits formal recognition from the Taraba State Government. However, recent pronouncements by the State Governor have caused anxiety and unrest, prompting the KYN to seek urgent assistance.

The organization implores President Tinubu to intervene in the following manner:
1. Bring attention to the potential repercussions of the Governor’s proposals regarding the Ukwe Takum Stool.
2. Urge the Governor to acknowledge the Kuteb people’s choice and facilitate the formal appointment of Prince Rimamnyang Habu Ahmadu as the new Ukwe Takum.
3. Emphasize the importance of preserving the centuries-old Ukwe Takum structure, akin to protecting any cherished traditional institution.

In conclusion, the KYN expresses gratitude for the opportunity to convey their concerns and appeals for prompt attention to their plight.

The plea from the Kuteb nation serves as a poignant call for safeguarding cultural heritage and preserving indigenous governance systems, resonating beyond regional boundaries.
