Bolanle Raheem and Drambi Vandi are at the center of a high-profile case involving the alleged killing of a Lagos-based lawyer, Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem, on Christmas Day. On Wednesday, Assistant Superintendent of Police Olorunshola Segun, a prosecution witness, provided crucial testimony regarding the incident before a Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square. Segun recounted how he disarmed ASP Drambi Vandi shortly after the tragic event.
Segun, who is currently assigned to the Ajah Police Station, explained that on December 25, 2022, he was part of a patrol team scheduled to operate for 24 hours. He detailed that he was responsible for patrolling the Ajah area, while Vandi was tasked with patrolling from Ajah to Ilaje. After the patrol team departed the police station following their morning parade, Segun returned to the station two hours later. At that time, a man on a motorcycle approached him and reported that one of their officers, Drambi Vandi, had shot a pregnant woman.
Following this alarming report, Segun informed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) about the incident. The DPO then called in the anti-crime patrol team, and Segun accompanied them to the hospital. He noted that approximately 30 minutes later, the DPO returned with ASP Vandi, who was dressed in a native shirt over his uniform trousers and was carrying his rifle on his left shoulder. The DPO was accompanied by two armed policemen. Upon their arrival, the DPO instructed that Vandi be disarmed and detained.
Segun stated that Vandi handed his rifle over to him in the charge room, as he was next in command to the DPO. After receiving the rifle, the armourer, whose office was located near the charge room, requested that Segun give him the weapon. Segun admitted that he was unaware of what the armourer did with the rifle after handing it over.
During cross-examination, the defense counsel, Mr. Adetokunbo Odutola, inquired whether Segun had made a written statement regarding the incident. Segun confirmed that he had, and after verifying the statement he provided at the State Criminal Investigation Department, the defense sought to submit it as evidence. The prosecution did not object, and the statement was marked as Exhibit P6. Additionally, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo, informed the court that the prosecution had presented a ballistics report related to the firearms involved in Raheem’s death to the defense counsel. Justice Ibironke Harrison subsequently adjourned the case until February 2, 2023, for the continuation of the trial.
