Nigeria Labour Congress Plans Nationwide Protest Over Economic Hardship and Insecurity

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a two-day nationwide protest scheduled for February 27th and 28th to address the increasing economic challenges and insecurity in the country. This decision was made following the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, where President Joe Ajaero highlighted the government’s failure to implement previously agreed-upon measures.

Ajaero expressed disappointment and condemned the government’s inaction, stating that the NEC had unanimously agreed to issue a 14-day ultimatum to the government. If the government fails to meet the specified conditions by the expiration date of February 22nd, the NLC will proceed with the two-day nationwide protest. Additionally, the NEC declared that if their demands are not met after the protest, a seven-day notice will be issued, leading to an indefinite nationwide strike starting on March 2nd.

It is evident that Nigerian workers seek tangible actions rather than mere rhetoric. Ajaero urged all affiliates, state councils, and civil societies to mobilize for effective action. He emphasized the urgent need for the government to address the populace’s longstanding plight and restore confidence in the democratic process and social dialogue.

This demonstration signals the NLC’s determination to prompt a swift and meaningful response from the Federal Government to alleviate the suffering of Nigerian citizens and workers.
