In an unprecedented move, the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has experienced a significant boost as 2,950 executive members and supporters from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Young Progressive Party (YPP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) defected to the party in the Ohafia Local Government Area.
The mass defection also included members from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Peoples Party (APP), and Alliance for Democracy (AD), signifying a major political realignment in the state.
Hon Ikenna Ukwa, the leader of the defectors, emphasized that their decision to join the APC stemmed from a desire to contribute to the progressive agenda championed by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He expressed commitment to bringing democratic governance to the grassroots, especially in areas where it is most needed.
Ukwa further pledged to collaborate with existing APC members to advance the party’s objectives within the Ohafia local government area and beyond.
Chief Offor Okorie, the State publicity secretary of the APC, extended gratitude to the leader of the defectors for mobilizing a substantial following across party lines. He underscored the significance of the defectors’ symbolic act of tearing their former party membership cards, emphasizing their immediate integration into the APC and the inclusive role they will play in the party’s activities at both the local and state levels.
