The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has emphasized that all imported fuels undergo extensive quality re-certification before being dispensed in the country. Ayo Cardoso, the Coordinator for the South-West Region of NMDPRA, affirmed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
Cardoso addressed concerns raised by some Lagos residents about the rapid combustion of petrol being dispensed at certain fuel stations. He reassured the public, stating that all imported fuels must meet the SON/NIS specifications and undergo quality re-certification before being allowed to discharge into the depots.
Highlighting that the Research Octane Number (RON) for Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) must adhere to a minimum limit of 91, Cardoso emphasized that the quality of fuel purchased at the pumps could be affected by various factors such as low tire pressure, dirty air filters, overloading, and poor driving habits, contributing to increased fuel consumption.
Residents have voiced distress over the accelerated burning of petrol, compounding their economic challenges. Adenike Ayodele, a civil servant, expressed concerns about potential tampering with petrol quality and the associated dangers.
This assurance from NMDPRA aims to allay public fears and emphasize the commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of fuel available to Nigerian consumers.
