In a recent announcement, the Electoral Commission of South Africa clarified the voting process for citizens residing outside the country. According to the Commission, those registered on a specific country’s voters’ roll do not need to inform the Chief Electoral Officer if they plan to vote at the diplomatic mission of registration. During a media briefing in Pretoria, Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo highlighted that while voters registered elsewhere, including local voters intending to vote at a foreign diplomatic mission, must notify the CEO of their intentions to vote in that country. To facilitate this process, Mamabolo mentioned that the deadline for submitting notices to vote outside the country is 22 April 2024. An online notification system (VEC10) is accessible on the Commission’s website for this purpose. Additionally, special voting at diplomatic missions is scheduled for either Friday, 17 May 2024, or Saturday, 18 May 2024. The specific date for each mission will be determined based on the host country’s prevalent religious and cultural practices. For those wishing to vote outside their designated voting station on Election Day (29 May 2024), the Commission reaffirmed the importance of voting at the registered location. However, in cases where voters anticipate being in a different district, they are required to inform the Commission of their absence and specify the alternative voting station. A notification portal will be launched for this purpose, with the deadline set for 17 May 2024.
