The Constitution Review Committee for the 10th House, chaired by Rep. Benjamin Kalu and with Rep. Julius Ihonvbere as deputy chair, was inaugurated by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. The importance of reviewing the constitution was emphasized due to the nation’s population growth from 120 million in 1999 to over 220 million in 2023.

In response to the changing demographics, the committee aims to engage stakeholders and the public to propose alterations to the 1999 Constitution, ensuring inclusivity by accommodating the concerns of people living with disabilities. Since the fourth Republic’s inception, there have been five alterations to the Constitution, enhancing democratic institutions, federalism, and governance.

Speaker Abbas highlighted the proactive approach of the 10th house towards legal reforms, emphasizing the need for a dynamic and transformative constitution. The committee’s composition reflects representation from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with additional female members from each geo-political zone to promote inclusiveness.

Chairman Kalu outlined key areas of focus including state police establishment, state mining access, increased female political participation, and clarifying tax collection responsibilities. The committee also aims to address unresolved bill proposals from previous alterations, such as granting authorities to summon Presidents and State governors and ensuring government policies support food rights and security.

The commitment of the 10th house members towards reforming national laws to address current societal realities was reiterated, underscoring the importance of a responsive and forward-looking constitution. The ongoing review process is poised to make the constitution a dynamic and relevant document that reflects the needs of Nigeria’s evolving society.
