Nigeria Football Federation Parts Ways with Jose Peseiro Over Contract Dispute

New details have emerged regarding the recent departure of former Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro from the Nigeria Football Federation. Peseiro officially announced his exit on Friday after his contract came to an end on February 29.

According to reports from SCORENigeria, the NFF was eager to retain the 63-year-old coach, but negotiations for a new contract hit a roadblock. The NFF proposed to maintain Peseiro’s current salary of $50,000 per month, while the Portuguese coach demanded a significant increase to $120,000 per month to continue in his role.

An NFF official revealed, “He asked for $120,000 a month salary, but the NFF offered to pay him his current salary of $50,000 instead. That was where negotiations broke down.”

Peseiro took on the role of Super Eagles head coach in May 2022 and achieved notable success during his tenure. He guided the team to a commendable second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Throughout his time in charge, the Super Eagles secured 11 victories, four draws, and suffered seven defeats in a total of 22 matches.

Despite the impressive results on the field, the disagreement over contract terms ultimately led to Peseiro’s departure from the national team. The NFF and the former coach were unable to reach a compromise, resulting in the end of their professional relationship.

As the search for a new head coach begins, the Super Eagles will now look to build on the progress made under Peseiro’s guidance and continue their pursuit of success on the international stage. Stay tuned for updates on the next chapter in Nigerian football.
