Benue State Military Crackdown on Violating Herdsmen: Operation Whirl Stroke Update

The military in Benue State is cracking down on herdsmen who are violating the state’s Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranch Establishment Law. Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia, the Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), issued a warning during a media briefing in Makurdi, emphasizing the need for action after the expiration of a two-week ultimatum given to armed and non-armed herdsmen operating in the state.

A seven-man committee was established by the Benue State Security Council to determine the implementation of measures if the herdsmen fail to comply with the withdrawal order. While some herdsmen have already withdrawn, those who continue to graze openly or bear illegal arms will face consequences.

During the ultimatum period, OPWS conducted clearance operations in areas like Kwande Local Government Area to address criminal activities. The state government is firm in its stance that there is no room for open grazing in Benue State, and the law will be enforced without exception.

Deputy Governor Dr. Sam Ode highlighted the peaceful withdrawal of some herdsmen following security operations. The state Attorney General, Fidelis Mnyim, reiterated the prohibition of open grazing and emphasized that those who do not comply will face the full force of the law.

The message is clear – the time for compliance is over, and those who continue to violate the law will face the consequences. The state is committed to upholding the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranch Establishment Law, ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
