Nigerian Navy Secondary School in Akpabuyo LGA of Cross River State is currently facing a health crisis, as an outbreak of measles has prompted the school to take immediate action. In a notice posted in the school compound, parents were instructed to evacuate their children and wards until the situation improves. Academic activities have been suspended until further notice, with plans to resume once the outbreak is under control.

The statement from the Navy School to parents emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of the students. It read, “Good morning dear parents/guardians. This is to inform you that the school is vacating today due to some prevalent circumstances. The second-term academic activities will continue upon the return of the students. The date of return will be communicated. Please note that all SS 3 and JSS 3 students are to check for regular updates on WAEC, NECO, and BECE information. To this end, parents/guardians are kindly requested to pick up their children/wards with effect from today Fri 8 March 2024. Thank you and God bless.”

The outbreak has been confirmed by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Ayuk, who identified Navy Secondary School and Penniel Primary School as the two schools affected in the area. The State Rapid Response Team from the Ministry of Health has been activated and deployed to the affected area to contain the spread of the disease. Additionally, the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency is ramping up routine immunization efforts to boost herd immunity and prevent further cases.

The Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association in the School, Okon Bassey Esq, acknowledged receipt of the message instructing the children to go on vacation but expressed concern over the lack of communication from the school management regarding the situation.

As the community works together to address the measles outbreak, it is crucial for parents, school authorities, and health officials to collaborate and prioritize the health and safety of the students. Stay tuned for updates on the situation as efforts are made to control and prevent the spread of the disease.
