Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, has issued a dire warning about the escalating humanitarian crisis in Nigeria’s Northwest region. The organization reported “catastrophic levels of malnutrition” and a significant increase in life-threatening malnutrition cases, with over 854 children dying in MSF facilities across Zamfara, Sokoto, and Katsina due to armed conflict and limited access to healthcare.
Non-state actors, referred to as bandits, have been wreaking havoc in the region by looting, burning silos, and carrying out mass kidnappings for ransom. This has led to what MSF describes as a “neglected humanitarian emergency” with devastating consequences for the local population.
MSF’s teams in five of the seven northwestern states treated 171,465 malnourished children last year and admitted 32,104 to hospitals for severe acute malnutrition, marking a 14% increase from the previous year. Despite the alarming rise in malnutrition cases, the crisis in the region has not received adequate recognition, hindering the much-needed humanitarian response.
The situation is particularly dire in Katsina, where MSF found high levels of acute malnutrition, with 17.4% of surveyed children suffering from malnutrition in Jibia Local Government Area. Tragically, many children admitted to MSF facilities in the northwest are dying within 48 hours of arrival, highlighting the urgent need for improved access to healthcare services.
In addition to the child fatalities, over 2,000 people have been killed in the North-west due to banditry, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. The persistent violence in states like Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, and Kebbi has displaced communities, destroyed livelihoods, and made it increasingly difficult for people to access food, healthcare, and other essential services.
The MSF’s report underscores the urgent need for international attention and support to address the escalating crisis in Nigeria’s Northwest region. With millions of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition and thousands of lives lost to violence and conflict, immediate action is needed to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of vulnerable populations.
