Anambra election: 'All eyes on you' - Accord charges new INEC boss on free, fair polls

The Accord political party has called on the newly sworn‑in Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, to discharge his duties without bias or favoritism. This appeal follows Amupitan’s confirmation by the Council of State and the National Assembly and his subsequent swearing‑in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The party’s National Chairman, Barrister Maxwell Mgbudem, praised Amupitan’s appointment as well‑deserved, citing his extensive experience as a legal luminary, academic, and administrator. Accord emphasized the importance of his role in the country’s democratic process, especially with the upcoming Anambra State governorship election scheduled for 8 November 2025. That election will be a significant test for the new INEC leadership, as citizens expect a free, fair, and transparent process.

Accord stressed the need for adequate preparation, including the readiness of electoral materials and equipment, to avoid logistical issues and ensure that every vote counts. As Amupitan’s first election at the helm of INEC, the commission’s performance will be closely watched. The party urged him to build on the innovations introduced by his predecessor, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, and improve upon them to deliver credible elections. By doing so, Accord believes trust in the electoral process can be rebuilt and post‑election litigations reduced.

The success of the Anambra State governorship election will have significant implications for future contests, including the 2026 Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, the Ekiti and Osun gubernatorial elections, and ultimately the 2027 general election. Accordingly, Accord emphasized the need for neutrality and a level playing field for all participating parties and candidates. With the nation’s eyes on the commission, Amupitan’s leadership will be crucial in shaping Nigeria’s democratic trajectory.
